A Quick Overview of Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that are surgically implanted into your jaw bone to replace tooth roots. When you are missing teeth, the jawbone begins to lose density and shrinks since there is no tooth root to stimulate it. Biocompatible implants help to stimulate the bone and promote strength and oral health.

During a three to six month healing process, the jaw bone fuses to the implant post, anchoring it in place. Many denture wearers choose implants since they provide a more secure fit than denture adhesive or natural suction. Implant dentures snap into the titanium posts that are anchored in the bone, providing ultimate stability.

Implants replace tooth roots, providing the ultimate stability for crowns, bridges, and dentures.

The Dental Implant Process

The dental implants process first begins with a consultation with Dr. Pearson. She will perform a full oral examination, discuss your medical history and medications with you, and take images of your jaw bone to make sure it is dense enough to hold the implants in place. If the bone is not strong enough, you may need to undergo bone graft surgery before you can have dental implants placed.

Once Dr. Pearson is satisfied that you are a good candidate, she will develop a comprehensive plan for treatment that covers everything from anesthesia to recovery. On the day of your surgery, anesthesia will be administered to help make you feel comfortable. She will then begin surgically placing the implants into your jaw bone. An implant crown will only require a single implant, while a bridge or denture segment may require more. A full denture will usually require four to six implants per arch.

Dr. Cheryl Pearson is one of the few dentists dual-credentialed from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

The next step is the healing process. Over three to six months, the bone will fuse to the implants in a process called osseointegration. Dr. Pearson will provide you with a temporary restoration during this healing period, and will most likely recommend a soft food diet for a specified period during your recovery. While you are healing, Dr. Pearson will have your permanent restoration created at our partner dental laboratory.

When your jaw bone has fully healed, you will return to our office for a second surgery. At this time, she will expose the implants from under the gums and attach tiny connectors called abutments. Dr. Pearson will check that the restoration is fitting properly and make any necessary adjustments. She will then use dental adhesive to permanently attach the restoration to the implants.
